This elective visual arts course invites students to explore the expressive and narrative power of comic and anime art while developing foundational and advanced skills in drawing, design, and visual storytelling. Through a standards-based approach, students will engage in the artistic process: creating, presenting, responding, and connecting their work to both contemporary and cultural art forms. Rooted in the world of Japanese manga, Western comics, and animation influences, students will learn to develop original characters, settings, and storyboards while experimenting with a range of materials and techniques—both traditional and digital. Students will: Apply the elements of art and principles of design to comic and anime art. Demonstrate an understanding of figure drawing, facial expressions, and stylization. Develop storyboarding and visual narrative skills. Explore the history and cultural significance of anime and comics across the globe. Critique and reflect on their own work and that of others using appropriate visual arts vocabulary. Prepare and present a final portfolio or sequential art project.
