In this course, students will immerse themselves in the world of creative writing. Using verbal, written, audio, tactile, and even scent-based prompts, students will write in a variety of genres and styles. The majority of this class will be spent with pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard). We will cover flash fiction, extended pros, poetry (both structured and nuanced), and even stage/screenwriting. We will spend one unit of the course to work on drafting, editing, and polishing work to really shine. The goal of this course is to help students learn to express themselves through words, find and develop their voice as writers, and complete the class with a collection of writing that reflects each one of them uniquely.
Because of the exploratory and personal nature of this elective, traditional grading is not a focus. Instead, students are encouraged to engage fully, take creative risks, and find joy in the process of writing. The aim is to help students express themselves, develop their unique voices, and walk away with a body of work that reflects their growth and individuality. Please note this is an elective course and is not aligned with any English standards.
Participants must currently be in grades 7 to 12.
