This course is designed for students who demonstrate strong interest, skill, and commitment in the visual arts and are ready to work at an advanced level. Emphasizing originality, technical skill, and conceptual depth, the course guides students in developing a personal voice through unique works of art created for portfolios and exhibitions. Students will explore formal and conceptual issues through a variety of projects that incorporate the Elements of Art and Principles of Design. Drawing, painting, and mixed media techniques will be practiced using materials such as pencil, pen, ink, charcoal, pastel, watercolor, and tempera. Students are encouraged to investigate individualized areas of interest and creative problem-solving through both guided and self-directed work. A strong emphasis is placed on the study of art history and contemporary practices. Students will analyze and critique works of art, study major movements and artists from various cultures and time periods, and interpret artistic styles through class discussions, slides, videos, writings, and studio work. Maintaining a working sketchbook or journal is required, serving as a space for planning, reflection, and creative exploration.
